The Aspen City Council has created an Aspen Global Warming Alliance to guide the City of Aspen in implementing its new "Canary Initiative" to address global warming. The City Council has recognized that Aspen's economy is dependent upon tourism and a healthy mountain community life style, that the world's leading climate scientists have documented a clear global warming trend and the unmistakable impact of human activities on that trend, and that climate change could be the most critical current threat to Aspen's way of life, health, and economy.
The Council adopted the Canary Initiative in order to implement local actions to help pave the way for national and international leadership in addressing global warming. The City Council believes that more should be done to address the potential risks associated with the phenomenon of global warming. The Global Warming Alliance that will work with the City to implement its global warming goals includes the Aspen Institute, the Aspen Global Change Institute, the Community Office for Resource Efficiency, the Aspen Skiing Company, the Rocky Mountain Climate Organization, Holy Cross Energy, New Century Transportation Foundation, Rocky Mountain Institute, Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, Climate Mitigation Services, and Susan Joy Hassol.
